Oxen Race and Saint Day of San Giorgio

In the town of Caresana on April 23rd (the saint day of San Giorgio) the Palio dei Buoi (oxen race) takes place every year. Historically in this area, oxen were used in pairs to tow the plow and to carry out heavy jobs in the countryside. The race of Caresana has been held for over 700 years.  San Giorgio is the patron saint of farm workers. Oxen hauling carts are raced down the city’s streets, with the winner being able to carry the saint's banner proudly on its cart. Info: Caresana District Ph. +39 0161.78112
